What is Pilates?

"Pilates develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit"

Joseph Pilates

Far more than just building a strong core or correcting bad posture, Pilates is a system of conditioning for the whole body and mind.

When practiced correctly under supervision of a good teacher it can make you stronger all over, improve flexibility and coordination, reduce stress, improve mental focus and generally leave you with an elevated sense of well-being.

A Pilates mat work class will be mainly spent moving through different positions carrying out small and precise repetitions of a movement. I like to include standing work in each session and am mindful of exercises being functional to support you through your daily life as well as to compliment other activities.

I use a variety of small equipment to offer resistance, assistance and instability. The foam roller and small balls are my faves but you can also expect resistance bands, small hand weights and the Pilates "Magic Circle". No two classes are the same, you will be continually challenged!

The importance of maintaining correct posture whilst exercising is critical, it will prevent injury, hugely increase effectiveness, and ultimately will become second nature. You will carry it through your daily life and find it increases vitality, flexibility and total body strength.

"Through the Pilates method of body conditioning this unique trinity of a balanced body, mind and spirit can ever be attained. Self confidence follows."

Joseph Pilates
